To separate the image of and transform a couple of square meters into a peaceful island of conversations right in the heart of a bustling mall is a great challenge. The brief was nothing less than to create a place contrasting markedly with the never-ending marketplace overwhelmed by constant stimuli. An alluring café lacking any sort of obtrusiveness had to be designed. The overall concept of our client was to deliver something modern that simultaneously withstands time.
All the available surfaces are separated from the dull floor of the mall; the colourless tiles have been replaced by laminated floorboards tending into white. The walls are covered by uniquely patterned three-dimensional tiles evoking the image of pressed sugarcane fibres in piles. Refurbished by prudent colours, the café has only one piece of furniture claiming dominance; the counter covered with a gleaming, black, three-dimensional ceramic coating. Therefore, the friendly ambiance of the place is derived rather from the bold usage of circles, spheres and arches than the colour scheme of the café. The sphere-shaped pendants are excellent matches for the snow-white circular lights on the wall. Circle-shaped tables, bright white and transparent plastic bar stools and chairs in the shape of a shell welcome guests in the seating area.
